There is no single conversation that covers everything. It can help to return to the questions in smaller steps, with the child’s views included throughout.
Begin with the child
What would the child like adults to know about them? What do they enjoy? What helps when they feel worried? Are there things they find difficult to say in a meeting?
Consider how they prefer to share their views. A conversation, a written question or help from a trusted person may suit them better than speaking to a room of adults. Ask what they want to know about the home, rather than assuming which questions will matter most.
Understand the proposed home
Read the current Statement of Purpose for the home being considered. Ask how the child’s needs would be assessed alongside those of children already living there.
Talk about the support available and any areas needing further discussion. Avoid relying on a general description of the provider when the question concerns a particular home or child.
Ask who can explain the plan to the child and how unanswered questions will be followed up.
Talk about an ordinary day
Everyday details can make an unfamiliar place easier to imagine. Ask about education, meals, activities, quiet time and how children can influence daily life.
What might the first evening involve? How will important belongings be kept safe? Who could the child speak with if they need help? If an answer depends on an individual plan, record that clearly rather than making a general promise.
Include important relationships
Which relationships matter to the child? What contact is set out in their placement plan? Are there practical arrangements or risk assessments that need to be understood before the move?
Families may have questions about communication too. Clarify who will speak with them, what can be shared and how updates will work. These arrangements need to fit the child’s circumstances and agreed plan.
Finish with a clear next step
Write down the questions that remain, who will answer each one and how the child will receive the answer. Check which documents and arrangements still need to be agreed.
